The Law Of Attraction And You
Some people seem to have luck in everything they undertake, while others are haunted by bad luck and fail all the time. After a long series of unfortunate events, both personally and professionally, Rhonda Byrne, author of the famous book ‘The Secret’, claims to have discovered what distinguishes the lucky ones from those who are less fortunate. It’s all about the way in which people apply the law of attraction.
It seems that the law of attraction works for perfectly for millions of people around the world, who can talk you for hours about miraculous changes that took place in their lives. Most of them were able to solve problems, to find love and to heal themselves. The secret lies probably in the power of autosuggestion.
Let’s find out more about how does the law of attraction work.
Consider yourself a magnet that attracts energies in accordance with the subtle vibrations produced by your thoughts and emotions. Happenings and experiences you live are the result of your thoughts. If you don’t trust yourself and your ability to attract wealth, love and health, you block the positive energy, because your impatience acts as a barrier. It is said that lucky people are more detached from their ultimate purpose, leaving the laws of the universe to help them. Lucky people feel lucky and trust themselves, without being overwhelmed by problems that any human being has in every moment of his life.
Start by thinking about what you really want. You must focus on what you desire and to forget about lacks. You should always read and write positive affirmations, avoiding expressions like ‘I don’t want’ or ‘I can’t have’. Your statements are detailed images that you project to the universe.
Love yourself! Love and positive thoughts attract positive energies. The easiest and most effective way to accomplish your desires is to imagine that you have already obtained the object of your desire, that it is part of your everyday life. When you want something, you should focus your thoughts and attention on it; by thinking intensely, you are emitting vibrations that attract positive things to your life.
Everything around you has a different effect on your life: books, magazines, music, people and information that feed your mind and spirit. Start doing things that make you feel relaxed. All these facts influence your way of thinking and feelings, being in fact, your messages to the universe.
You attract exactly what you’re thinking about and people who think and feel like you. Eventually, your whole existence is determined by your thoughts and feelings.
A journal is a good tool to make you realize how many beautiful things are in your life. Amazing sunsets, birds singing, wild flowers, the laugher of a child, a walk in nature, the smile of a another person- these are all examples that melt your heart. Be grateful and enjoy everything you. Many people have lost the loved ones or don’t have the possibility to enjoy the world around them. Try to see the best part and stop thinking that something bad can happen to you.

Importance of a Smile
A smile is a powerful thing
People from everywhere around the world smile when they are happy.
This is a world wide phenomenon common to every culture and country on this planet. A smile is one thing that links every human being on earth, we all smile and we all feel good when we smile.
So why don’t we smile more?
I know that the world is in a state of turmoil, uncertainty is prevalent everywhere you turn, but if you can just find something in your daily life to smile about you will notice that you mood becomes lighter, your willing to pass your smile on to others along the way and you feel more connected to the world around you.

Do you want to make yourself feel better, achieve this in an instant, no medication or alcohol needed. All you need to do is lift the corners of your mouth and smile. After just a few minutes you will notice the difference in your attitude as the tension seems to fade. Do you feel calmer, more relaxed? I knew you would.

Studies have shown that even a fake smile will help you to find the lighter side of most situations. Bite your tongue and paste that smile on when you all you want to do is let your frustrations fly and you will notice that afterwards the situation wasn’t really that bad to deal with.
Guess what the side effect of smiling is, the laugh. Everyone knows that laughter is the best medicine.
>> Laughter is the best medicine
Studies at the University of Maryland Medical Center have shown that laughter increases your blood flow, can lower blood sugar in diabetics, relaxes the muscles, helps in regulating the immune system and burns calories. It’s true, researchers at Vanderbilt University have discovered that 15 minutes of laughing can burn up to 40 calories. Laughter has also been described as the “tranquillizer with no side effects.”
The next time you’re frustrated with someone or something try smiling even if you don’t mean it. You will notice that it is hard to stay angry while you are doing this. The added benefit is that it completely confuses whoever you were butting heads with. Opponents are ready for just about any kind of verbal abuse but are thrown completely off course by a smile and a laugh. It doesn’t take long for them to either join in or throw their hands up in frustration and storm off, either way you win.
With all the benefits and advantages smiling gives you, you would think more people would be doing it. Maybe everyone just needs to practice a little more, remember it all starts with a smile.

A managed care consultant dies and goes to Heaven. Frankly, he can’t believe his good fortune in being there, given the life he has led. But St. Peter checks the records and says, ‘There’s no mistake, you’re supposed to be here. See, it says right here that you are scheduled for Heaven…and you’re authorized for three days.’
There may be a lot to laugh about in the health care system these days, but as a patient, humor is probably the last thing on your mind. Getting a frightening diagnosis is stressful-emotionally as well as physiologically. However, humor could be just the thing you need to get you through this period. Of course, there’s nothing funny about the fact that one has cancer.
But learning to find the light side of things that happen as a result of your cancer gives you a powerful tool to help you cope on a day-to-day basis. When you can poke fun at your stressors , you remove some of their emotional power over you. Humor helps you sustain an upbeat, optimistic frame of mind, even on the bad days. This more positive emotional state helps give you the resilience you need to cope with the next problem thrown your way. Your sense of humor also helps bring back some joy into your life.
There’s no rigorous evidence that humor and laughter add years to your life, but they certainly add life to your years. Cancer patients will often say: ‘If it hadn’t been for my sense of humor, I would never have gotten through the treatments, let alone the disease.’ They note that finding a light side of things was essential to maintaining hope and determination to fight the disease.

Humor provides a sense of control over the stress that goes along with battling cancer by giving you more control over your daily mood. A good belly laugh also boosts both your energy level and immune system on the days when you don’t want to even get out of bed. This is especially important, since most patients experience fatigue as a result of their cancer treatment. Finally, humor and laughter provide a means of ‘letting go’ of the anger and anxiety.

Dr. Bernie Siegel has been reminding us for years that emotional factors can play an important role in battling disease. By sustaining a more positive mood, and reducing the amount of time spent in a state of anger, anxiety, or depression, you are playing an active role in mobilizing your body’s own health and healing resources. Your emotional state begins working for your health, rather than against it. Laughter is one of the most powerful and rapid means you have of replacing a negative with a positive mood.
Ian Gawler, author of Peace of Mind and an Australian doctor who has survived bone cancer for several decades, used the power of laughter to heal himself. There are many similar examples related in Cancer Free For Life where the author describes the amazing power of positive thinking and positive living for rapid healing of cancer . Watching funny movies and cartoons seem to have a healing and effective impact on cancer patients. They lift the mood and help strengthen the immune system, which through the laughter receives a message of joy and hope. Most stress can be alleviated with laughter, and this again helps the immune system concentrates its resources toward healing and scavenging cancer cells as opposed to reducing the impact of stress on the body.

Human Connection and A Balanced Life
As social human beings we naturally crave balance, connection and happiness.
But often lock ourselves away on the computer for hours at a time and end up isolated and stressed.
Stress leads to ill health. So do something about it now for your own happiness and well being. Here is an article I discovered recently from Grand Bahamas Freeport News …
Balance should be a natural state for us, but is it? Do you sometimes feel that you want to stop the world, even just for a moment, to catch up?
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed and unable to complete all the items on your ‘to do list’? Do you sometimes feel that time is speeding up, giving you less time to do what you were able to do years ago?
If you say ‘yes’ to most or all of my questions, welcome, and you are not alone. If you believe it or not, time is actually speeding up, and yes, we do have more to do, or so we believe.
There was a time when we basically just had your profession, or work, and family. Time was naturally balanced between work time and free time to pursue private interests.
Without computers, air travel, instant messaging etc. our lives would be more focused within our families and communities; it would be less exciting, maybe, but naturally more balanced. We would live off the land, be in harmony with the seasons by eating what was natural to our bodies.
Yes, I know we don’t really want to live there anymore. The past feels so far away, so antiquated, and many of you are too young to have experienced this tranquil life anyway. But there is a primal instinct for balance in every living entity.
Subscribe to ‘Benefits of Laughter’ E-Course here ==>
Our human instincts become more and more covered up in our modern world of ‘instant reward’ with the push of a button, and the overwhelming world of plastics and toxins.
Then there is the information overload. It is a love/hate relationship with the media, the TV and the computer. Can you imagine your life without these inventions?
No, of course not, me neither, but how many times have you spent late night hours on your computer until your eyes burn and your back aches?
It is so easy to ‘get lost’ on the ‘world wide web’.
It is definitely exciting as long as it does not rule your life. Yes, there is an addiction to TV and the computer in many of us.
Of course it is an amazing tool; I am using it right now to write this article for you and will send it shortly to the newspaper with the click of a button.
The question is whether we stay on the computer for hours on end or not. We have to ask ourselves this question: how much time do I spend on unnecessary ’surfing the net’, and how much time do I spend with my family, friends and in community activities? When was the last time you sat down with a good book?
You have to become aware of how much time you spend on unsocial activities, isolated from others, or only connected through a device like the phone or computer?
Although we are blessed being connected to the world through these devices and they have their purpose in our lives, they can also prevent us from satisfying our most primal desire to be in physical contact with each other. A lot of our modern mental, emotional and physical problems have an unrecognized root in this unnatural isolation; it can be the source of pain on all these levels.
It creates tension and stress, impatience and anger, amongst other disturbances. What can we do about this?
To balance your life will be a lifelong exercise, but well worth it. Why? Because only a balanced life will create the joy, peace and happiness you crave for, and are actually the most natural states of life.
Soothing the soul
What are the things that soothe your spirit, stimulate your imagination, and energize your body? Only you can find out by taking stock of how you live your life each day.
Very often, unwanted habits creep into your life, first uncomfortable, but through repetition you become accustomed to them until they create problems on a physical, mental or emotional level.
Now you feel you need help, but nobody can help you unless you recognize the root of your stress and are willing to break, or replace your bad habits with good ones.
Your body always knows when it is in misalignment, which means out of balance.
After you have become aware of the reasons why you feel so stressed (this may need the assistance of a health care professional), and you are willing to create more balance in your life, you only need to recreate your timetable.
That means, breaking old habits that prevent your natural state of happiness.
Here are a few tips on what you may want to do
- Throw out as many junk-food items as you find in your kitchen, because unless you start honouring your physical body and what you feed it, your body will be in stress and toxic overload.
- Supplement your food with appropriate vitamins, minerals and special combinations to support the weakest part in your body system, because your unique genes may need some extra support.
- Schedule time for outside activities; the gym is only a substitute for outside, and not the only one; your home can be your gym, even without equipment. Besides, our warm weather permits almost year round outside activities and sports training.
- Laugh and sing more often, laughter works wonders for your body chemistry, stimulating happy moods.
Sing in the bathroom (there is something about the acoustics there, because even my voice sounds pretty good in the shower), or sing on your beach walks, even if you just hum a song.
Sing all day long, it will keep your mood balanced. My grandfather used to hum all day long, not really a song, but just from his heart and spirit.
I have never heard him raise his voice in anger; he lived a very balanced life up into his 90’s. Play an instrument, play with your pet, play with your children and play with your partner! Play and childlike (not childish) behaviour is the best stress relief and a great communicator.
We never lose our inner child, it may just be a bit dusty or covered up; bring it out again. Life is serious, but it is also fun and beautiful.
We can only enjoy it to the fullest when we are in balance with ourselves, and the natural world around us.
An easy to learn method to ease stress and pain almost instantly is called Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT.
In the meantime, take stock of your life and take note of where you need to let go of stressors.

For the Time Being – Happy Days
It is thoroughly normal to be so tentative about the time of our lives, or so asleep within it, that we miss it entirely.
Being happy is a state of mind
I am sure we all do it but being consistent and meaning it is the most important thing about gratitude. I have learned to love everything in my life and not take it for granted.
Living a happy, resilient and optimistic life is wonderful, and is also good for your health. Being happy actually protects you from the stresses of life. Stress is linked to top causes of death such as heart disease, cancer and stroke.

A Big Smile, A Whole New Perspective
There are some great benefits in smiling, laughing and taking an easy going attitude
It’s amazing what a simple smile can do for your day. Try it and see
Walking around Portland, Oregon, you don’t get a sense that people are particularly worried or stressed out: You see people having coffee, working at their laptops, enjoying a meal and you don’t see furrowed brows, frowns, nail biting and incessant foot tapping. Portland is known for being easy going and laid back, so I’ve been observing how they do this, having recently moved from the East Coast where everyone is in a hurry and anything but easy going.
Lots of smiling: I’ve noticed that people are pretty smiley here, and it does seem genuine. Smiling automatically relaxes
Cutting out the drama: Also noticeable in Portland is a lack of drama queen reactions to things. Overreacting and being over dramatic is a lifestyle for a lot of folks who need a lot of attention, and unfortunately who don’t realize it has a way of hurting their relationships.
(Unless all their friends are also drama queens, in which the behaviors are supported and encouraged, thus feeding off each other, perpetuating the stereotype and lowering their chances of healthy and balanced relationships.)
Taking life in stride seems to be a basic, healthy coping skill here, and it’s a pleasure to be around people who aren’t “OMG!” -ing everything.
Being active outdoors: Everywhere you go in Portland you see people outside engaging in activity. I have mentioned in a previous article the benefits of being outdoors on stress reduction and see clearly that folks in Portland really get this and practice it daily.
Laughing, a lot: It is well documented that laughter is good medicine. Being able to laugh at oneself, especially, and not take oneself too seriously is pretty critical to being easy going.
Portlanders don’t take themselves too seriously, I have found, which isn’t to say they aren’t passionate and committed to their causes and interests, because they are.
It seems laughter is the great balancer, helping reduce stress and keeping one’s head clear. It’s great to be around people who laugh easily and find humor a great coping mechanism. It creates a relaxed atmosphere, which seems to be the goal in this town.
Taking time for others: Giving time and help in various forms has a way of making you feel better about yourself, which raises your esteem, lowers your anxiety and all around helps relationships and the larger community. Portland is well known for its volunteerism, and I truly believe this leads to being easy going, and is contagious, which is a beautiful cycle for everyone to be in.

How Can I Utilize the Law of Attraction to Make Positive Changes In My Life?
The Law of Attraction is a Universal Law Law of Attraction Relationship Coach Nannette Geiger, writes…
A Universal Law is one that operates dependably under all situations. A Universal Law doesn’t treat people who utilize the Principle more preferentially. It doesn’t take more kindly to the rich and famous. In fact, the LoA is working universally 24/7 whether you are aware of it, or not!
Why not harness the power that creates worlds to create the world of your dreams? Law of Attraction Life Coaching does just that.
By now, perhaps you’ve seen or at least heard about the movie "The Secret. Or not. Many people thought the movie lacked depth with a primary focus on material objects. Is that all this Universal Law is all about?
All you have to do is say you want something, spend some time thinking and imagining it and then POOF, it becomes part of your life experience. Just like the genie in Alladin s lamp who says: Your wish is my command .
The Law of Attraction States that What You Place Your Attention on Becomes Part of Your Experience
In very basic terms, the Law of Attraction states in the words of one of the teachers in The Secret, ‘what you think about and thank about, you bring about’. Whatever you give our attention to, whether wanted or unwanted, attracts more along the lines of what you’re thinking. Your thoughts send out signals or vibrations like a transmitting tower to the Universe. This attracts more people, situations and things that are like those thoughts. You can attract wealth and attract love and health too.
You may be wondering, "How does this really work? I’ve been wanting more money for years. I’ve wanted to have a loving partner in my life, and that’s not happening either."
Attract good health into your life through laughter. Check out the benefits of laughter E-Course here ====>
Your attention and energy has been focused on the lack of the better job, the lack of your ideal partner the lack of good health. Your thoughts and your deeply held beliefs are what is transmitting the energy to the Universe that says I m miserable, I want a better job, a life without pain, moan groan, poor me. Now you may get another job or a new lover, or an easing of pain but you took you and your miserable vibration with you you created another miserable job or relationship. Haven’t you ever noticed same boss, different head? Same guy, different name. The only common denominator is YOU!
This Is An Energy-based Universe
Quantum Physics tells us that what we observe we influence.. Your thoughts are the energetic impulses that communicate, not your words. Thoughts do create. Anything that has ever been created first evolved from the thought behind it.
Your Thoughts Are Creating Your Life
You are creating with your thoughts all day long. You may be re-creating more of the same, by thinking the same old thoughts so life doesn t appear to change much. You keep thinking thoughts along the same theme, therefore same stuff, different day. You have a programmed default setting in there somewhere that needs to be revised and refreshed. We all have them. We’ve learned most of this from our well-meaning parents and teachers. They didn t know any better. Now we do!
The Control of Your Thoughts Is Up To You
It doesn’t happen overnight. It took a while to have these programs installed, but sure enough we can override them. It is very simple process just not always easy.
That’s where working with a skilled Law of Attraction Coach comes in. You can transform your life as quickly as you can change your mind. For more information visit http://www.nanettegeiger.com

Laughing Benefits, Why Is Laughing Good For You
Here is an interesting and inspiring article I found recently on the benefits of laughter by author Jennifer Macleay that I would like to share with you today… I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
For those who want to go straight to laughter therapy to begin healing immediately click here!
~~~~~~~~~~~
I have been doing some study on the benefits of laughter . The reason for this is that my husband and I have the responsibility of managing a guesthouse. One of the functions of this guesthouse is to provide accommodation for workers who are assisting in third world countries.
These workers may be sick or burnt out or just in need of a break. I set about to collect a book of jokes to place on the coffee table to be a source of cheer. I decided to go further and include some of the physical benefits of laughing . What I found was quite enlightening and I found that my own spirits were lifted from doing this study.
One may question does God have a sense of humor?
The stock answer is: of course, He made you and me didn’t He
In recent years there has been many studies and much written on the benefits of laughter so I won’t go into detail in this article, except to serve as a reminder.
Laughing is thought to help you to fight illnesses and tumours.
Laughing acts as a muscle relaxant for example if someone is fearful of injections, a laugh just before will do wonders.
Laughing reduces allergic responses.
Laughing lifts your mood or your spirit.
Laughing reduces the effect of stress by lowering stress hormone levels.
One study showed that laughing helped keep diabetes under control.
Lowers blood pressure.
Improves brain and mental functions.
Gives a feeling of inner joy.
This is just a brief view of a few benefits of laughing. Although these are from relatively recent studies, the ancient words of Proverbs, which is writings of practical advice for daily living, confirms that: A cheerful heart is good medicine. The second half of this verse confirms what recent studies have found in angry, unhappy people, that their health deteriorates. Proverbs says: a crushed spirit dries up the bones. (Proverbs 17:22)
Learn how to transform pain into joy
My work as a clinical nurse has bought me in contact with a lot of older people. What stands out to me is that just about every old person 85 years plus, who does not have dementia, has a wonderful sense of humor. One dear old lady, had a long list of severe physical problems on her medical records, but to see her it was hard to believe, she just kept on keeping on with life, laughing and telling jokes as she went.
Although times may be tough and hard, Proverbs also says: the cheerful heart has a continual feast.
For a number of years we lived in a remote part of Papua New Guinea. We had to radio out to a town on the other side of the range with an order for the supplies that we needed. These supplies were bought and put on a boat that took several days to get to where we could pick them up. From our place to the pickup point was a two-day hike over rough mountainous trails and across dangerous rivers.
Quite often on arrival to meet the boat we would find that rough seas had turned the boat back. Or we may have ordered crucial parts for the chainsaw. Then after this long process to get them, we found that the wrong parts had been sent. This of course was causing much delay and frustration. We ate a lot of local foods when they were available, but we took the opportunity when a supply trip was coming up to order in some special things like canned foods and eggs. You can imagine our despair to find 18 dozen eggs, all broken and smelly after the two-day hike back from the boat because someone did not treat them with care.
So how does one deal with these extra frustrations in an already trying situation. For starters we had a deep conviction that despite all these events, God was still sovereign.
We would sit around the meal table, there were four of us, and we would take these frustrating events and turn them into humor.
We would use our imagination to concoct the most way out stories of how these events went wrong. We would laugh and laugh at each ones story. Then we might see who could think up the most uses for 18 dozen rotten eggs. Or what could we make out of all these useless chainsaw parts that we had collected through frustrating mistakes. We found that despite our often-desperate situations that the cheerful heart has a continual feast.
As wonderful as laughing is it is not always appropriate to laugh, and discernment is needed to be wise with ones humor. As the Bible states in Ecclesiastes: There is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.
Priceless Humor, Priceless Health
You’ve probably heard the old saying “laughter is the best medicine.” Today medical professionals and researchers are finding out this is more than an expression, it is good common sense.
Let the laugh doctor show you the health secrets of laughter
Studies conducted by doctors at Loma Linda University in California showed a variety of benefits to humor and laughter. Laughter has been shown to lower blood pressure, raise immunity, relax the muscles and release the feel-good chemicals called endorphins.
It’s no wonder there are laughing meditation practices that utilize the power of laughter.
Learn how to laugh for good health.
There are monks who arise each day and spend a certain amount of time just laughing. While you can go through the motions and ‘make yourself laugh’ it is much more fun to find something funny to laugh at. This is where your sense of humor comes in. The definition of funny to one person may be totally different to another.
One thing that is almost always sure to delight is watching videos and clips of cute animals or even viewing cute animal photos. Baby animals have a knack for warming the heart and eliciting a giggle from even the most solemn of us. Pets can also be a great source of lightheartedness, simply by watching them at play. The massive popularity of the recent Shiba Inu puppy cam proves how appealing baby animals are.
But don’t take my word for it…start laughing as much as you can! The more opportunities you give yourself to laugh the better. Cute Cams and Clips is one example of a site that features all kinds of funny video clips and photos of adorable things like puppies, kittens and more.
Chronic Illness Coping, Laughing Benefits
No one on earth would love to visit a doctor in all his sanity. But no matter how much we hate to knock at the Doc’s door, something or the other takes us right there.
And the visits increase with age, as does the number of health problems.
Now while it is true that doctors, treatments and medicines cannot be totally done away with, you can at least keep things within the limits of reason just by a smile or a grin every now and then.
Helping your health shine with just a smile well, if that sounded funny you can laugh alright, but it was not a jest by any means. On the contrary, health is indeed directly proportional to laughter.
The reasons are not hard to guess.
Everyone likes to share humor, make merry or have fun. But what you might not know just as yet is that, the more you laugh and be happy, the less threat you pose to your health.
No kidding this fun, joy and humor are instrumental in uplifting the moral and physical health of a human being. Research says that the chances of a heart attack are reduced by huge degrees for those who laugh more than their fellows. Laughter therapists hold that laughter plays a huge role in today’s saga of survival. In the rat race of life, every little thing may lead to stress, anxiety, agitation or depression. The common antidote to all these is nothing but a hearty laugh.
One good thing about the laughter therapy to health is that people never get tired of excess.
You can never possibly have enough of fun. If you love to laugh, you are all set to live a healthy stress-free life.
And this may hold fine testimony to all success stories of humor or humorous pieces of work, be it in books or over the Internet. Take for instance the funny columns in books, magazines or your daily. Or the funny stuff you get online to tickle your funny bone.
Didn’t you get hooked on to them for hours grinning ear to ear? And didn’t you manage to flip through them at least once even on a busy day? That is the where the ambrosia of survival lies.
Happiness and laughter relaxes you and relaxation relieves pain .
Nowadays, the Internet is an endless source of humorous sites where people spend hours to do away with their boredom, or even when they are not bored.
Voraciously reading jokes, watching funny videos or playing fun games they all knowingly or unknowingly ensure that they see the doctor less. Positive Effects Of Laughter
If there’s one thing I have to admit about my mother is that she was always right about this: Laughter Is The Best Medicine .
If you can’t laugh about yourself and the things that happen to you – you’re headed for a heart attack or some other malady, it’s the way the body works.
Laughter lightens the moment and strips away the seriousness that many of us approach life with; it releases the pain and chases away your personal rainstorms leaving a bright sunshiny day.
Scientists have also discovered that laughter strengthens your immune system and increases your cardiovascular flexibility (your blood vessels exercise through dilation).
According to Dr. Goodheart, the laughter doctor , laughter convulses your diaphragm, which in turn massages your internal organs.
Massaged internal organs are happy internal organs and they cooperate by staying plump and juicy.
She says that laughter also causes you to gulp in large portions of air, oxygenating your blood.
When that air is expelled, it’s been clocked at 70 miles an hour, providing the lungs with an excellent workout. By laughing, she says, you lose muscle control, which relaxes the skeletal system. According to Dr. Goodheart, four-year-olds laugh 500 times a day, while adults laugh a mere 15! She’s convinced that if we laugh as much as a four-year old, we’ve have the heart rate and blood pressure of that same child.
On top of all that, she continues, laughter causes the brain to produce hormones called beta endorphins which reduce pain and causes our adrenal glands to manufacture cortisol, which is a natural anti-inflammatory that’s wonderful for arthritis.
Laughter also provides a catharsis, which means to purify or purge, to the emotions. It also brings about a spiritual renewal or release from tension. You notice how sometimes you’ll see a comedian on television, and while he may not be that funny, something just makes you laugh uproariously? Your body seems to know that it needs the chemicals that are released through laughter.
I’ve always felt better after a good belly laugh or two. For me that means some very large-sounding snorts and a few donkey brays thrown into the bargain. Some people won’t even go to the movie with me because when I start laughing I cannot stop. My daughters always used to go, Mom! as they slunk down into their seats trying not to be seen.
When someone’s laughing, others laugh along. It’s contagious. You can’t help it. Oftentimes in my movie-theater laughter excursions, I have motivated a whole theater-full of people laughing right along with me. All this during the credits! (John Belushi being escorted through the prison in the opening credit scenes of The Blues Brothers. If you notice very carefully, while walking he has his butt cheeks pressed ever so tightly together as he’s leaving the prison. It was a subtle physical comment that kept me laughing. The more people turned and looked at me, the harder I laughed! Finally, they just gave up and joined me!).
The Difference between Laughter, Humor, Teasing and Tickling
However, there is a difference between laughter, humor, teasing or tickling. Humor is your way of looking at the world, it’s an intellectual exercise. It’s your idea of what’s funny; it’s not the actual act of laughing. Teasing and tickling are really a way of ridiculing someone. Tickling is something beyond someone’s control and is actually a physical invasion of sorts. Children laugh when you tickle them because the body works that way, but it’s actually a form of emotional ridicule that can result in very unpleasant feelings.
How to be happy now without the teasing
Teasing usually has an edge to it. People say they’re teasing, but essentially they are dead serious. I think teasing is a passive-aggressive way of hurting someone through the guise of humor. Teasing, according to Dr. Goodheart, “involves our having information about something that another person has very strong feelings about – usually painful feelings – and then bringing that information up without permission.” She also says that as people become very good friends they might give each other permission unconsciously to push each other’s buttons. Husbands, wives, lovers, and friends play with each other’s pain with permission. “When you tease without permission in order to trigger laughter, it’s very manipulative and controlling.”
All in all, when you’re feeling down and need a lift, try laughter. It may be hard at first, but just try laughing. Force yourself. Pretty soon, you’ll find yourself laughing at your own laughter and the looks you get from your family members.
They’ll begin to wonder what’s so funny and the corners of their mouths will crinkle up in the beginning of a smile. Now you’re laughing because they give you these quizzical looks wondering what you’re laughing about.
Pretty soon, your laugh is real, your belly aches, the tears flow from your eyes, and the world takes on a different hue.
The pain of any illness dies away and you are left feeling much more positive about life again and in the meantime your immune system is grateful for the boost!
As for me when I laugh like this, I need Depends. I laugh so hard sometimes I wet my pants and that has nothing to do with my age.
I can still hear my friend’s mom yelling at me today nearly 38 years later (while grinning ear to ear) to get off her brocade couch whenever I started laughing.
She knew what would happen.
When the world is plummeting down around your ears, laughter plays a very important role in keeping your sanity. Laughter turns your focus off the negative emotions such as anger, guilt and stress. It is so important as human beings that we learn to embrace both tears and laughter.
You laugh at a situation because it is illogical. We all know that a life full of only logic is boring to the tenth degree. Laughter can make the difference of how you choose to look at a situation. It turns it from a threat to a challenge, as laughter completely alters your perspective. Many a catastrophic situation has been turned into a barrel of laughter as it is repeated as entertainment, at a later date, to friends and relatives. It is truly a case of ‘looking back and laughing’. This kind of laughter is invaluable.
Boost your health through simple laughter and fun
A recent study revealed that knowing someone who is happy makes you 15.3% more likely to be happy yourself. Look how infectious a happy person is.
A researcher of University College London, Sophie Scott, says “We often mimic a person we are talking to and mirror their behavior?”
Perhaps it would be a good idea to spend some time in front of a mirror looking at how you present yourself. You may discover it would be an advantage to lighten up your general presentation.
A physician and medical sociologist at Harvard, Dr. Nicholas A. Christakis, says “Your emotional state depends not just on your actions and choices you make, but also on the actions and choices other people make. Many of which you don’t even know”.
Finding laughter in daily life profoundly enhances healing and the quality of life, for laughter has many mysterious healing powers.
Laughter has been used to assist in the reduction of symptoms of allergies, abdominal pain and digestive problems. Laughter also can be used to help you manage emotions of anger and fear. As well as all that, a good belly laugh exercises the diaphragm, contracts the abs and even works out the shoulders. It also leaves muscles more relaxed afterward and provides a good workout for the heart. Many say a good ten minute laugh is considered better than a 20 minute jog. Perhaps the old saying should be altered to: ‘a laugh a day keeps the doctor away.’
Laughter is something you can catch without even asking for it, even when you don’t feel like laughing. Ever tried to remain serious while everyone around you is crying tears of laughter?
Along with sex, prayer and meditation, music therapy, and progressive muscle relaxation exercises, laughter is high on the stress relieving list. To laugh is to see the whole world laugh with you, but weep and you weep alone.
Here are some people’s private thoughts on laughter:
Laibl Wolf, Rabbi and educational psychologist
We encourage humor that allows people to embrace the deep things o f life and to be connected together with each other. It is still the best breaker down of barriers that there is.
Diane Bodein Walters
There is a fine line between laughter and tears. I often see people move quickly from one to the other. There’s a quote of Oscar Wilde ‘Where there’s sorrow there’s holy ground’ so we have to be prepared for people to want to either cry or laugh. I feel they come from the same place, deep within the heart.
How Does Laughter Or Stress Affect Your Overall Health
Can laughter be used as a stress reliever and coping strategy in difficult situations? It would appear so.
Learn how to reduce stress through laughter
During World War Two, the soldiers between their battles would laugh and have fun whenever and wherever possible, so that they would put the negative and unpleasant memories out of their minds.
Why? Because it is a known fact that you can’t be stressed, depressed, or plagued with anxiety when you are having fun. They needed this diversion to forget, if even just for a limited time, so that they could carry on the extremely difficult tasks and responsibilities that they were charged with.
It was the same on the home front. There were more songs, plays, movies created than at any other time in history. There were all kinds of social activities to cheer up and keep people positively charged. And it worked on both the battle front, as well as at home. This ultimately with winning strategies and skilled efforts combined to bring victory.
The resiliency of people is truly remarkable and when times are tough, as is the case to day, people can, and must cope with an optimistic view of the future.
This is more easily accomplished when humor, laughter and playfulness are employed.
Humor and laughter help the person see a lighter and brighter side and help us focus on more creative and effective solutions.
People should also bear in mind that nothing is accomplished by adopting and maintaining a pessimistic perspective, as this only translates in negative thinking, attitude and action. Negative thinking can actually increase pain!
Life is short, live it to the fullest, love with all your heart, and laugh at every opportunity.
